Overview of the textile industry

Current development and role of the textile industry

The textile industry is one of the important industries of Vietnam.

The output of the textile industry: [Yearly Statistical Book, 2005]

-         In 2000: 356.4 million meter of cloth; 29.97 million meter of cotton fabric cloth; 430.6 million of towels; of which enterprises of the private sector produced 81.8 million meter of cloth; 29.97 million meter of cotton fabric cloth; 177.5 million of towels.

-         In 2005: 503.3 million meter of cloth; 36.4 million meter of cotton fabric cloth; 658.5 million of towels; of which enterprises of the private sector produced 131.3 million meter of cloth; 36.4 million of cotton fabric cloth and 450.5 million of towels.

Location of textile enterprises

Textile enterprises are scattered throughout the country. They are often located in industrial parks or in craft villages (mostly SMEs). The two provinces of Ha Tay and Thai Binh are the home of the most textile enterprises. In Ha Tay, there is Van Phuc village (Ha Dong town) and Duong Noi village (Hoai Duc district). In Thai Binh there is Nam Cao village (Vu Thu district) and Phuong La village (Hung Ha district).

Objectives

The objective of the textile industry in period from 2000 to 2010 is to enhance exports in order to raise foreign currency income, ensure debt payments balance, reproduce and expand manufacturing units to satisfy domestic demands regarding product quantity, quality, range and costs. The industry should gradually become a key exporting industry making great contribution to economic growth and job generation. It is planned that 2.000 million meters of cloth will be produced by the year 2010.

Directions

For technology

Investing in dept, upgrading and expanding existing technologies should be carried out in combination with purchasing new ones. Outdated technology and equipments need replacing; new technology and equipments should be adopted to improve the products quality.

 For allocation

Four existing textile centers of the country including the Eastern South, the Mekong Delta, the Red River Delta, and the Central Coastal regions should be enforced and developed.

For investment mobilization

Investments from various resources, both domestic and foreign, could be mobilized in diversified methods. Privatization of some textile enterprises should be conducted step by step.
